OTG under Linux is exactly the same, modern distributions of Ubuntu have the Avahi Daemon already installed, so it should all just work, see http://bit.ly/pi-otg. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what you mean about the magnetic lens, it works fine for me. I haven’t even tried it without the lens.
